"You don’t need religion to have morals. If you can’t determine right from wrong then you lack empathy, not religion."

sometimes people make me so sad. people that distance themselves without need. people that are so focused on one goal that they’re blind to the world. people that label themselves “asshole” or “narcissistic” not to accept themselves, but to excuse their hurtful actions.
but upon realizing that these types of people make me sad, i took a look at myself and realized that i do all these things. i recently moved to a new town and i haven’t been actively trying to make it my home. i use the excuse that i’m just “not in the right frame of mind to share myself with others” and that i don’t want to “force myself into friendship”. so i label myself as an “introvert” as an excuse to distance myself from everyone and focus on school.
the kinds of people that make me sad do so because i see myself in them. and i think that’s kind of beautiful - to see yourself in others and realize how trivial and shared your personal battles are. i don’t have a lot of strong beliefs, but one thing that’s central to my philosophy about life is that we were given a spectrum of emotion for a reason. every feeling is valid and meaningful. i’m so grateful that i’ve encountered this sadness for the past three months to come out on the other end with a greater love and understanding of myself and others.
"When someone seeks," said Siddhartha, "then it easily happens that his eyes see only the thing that he seeks, and he is able to find nothing, to take in nothing because he always thinks only about the thing he is seeking, because he has one goal, because he is obsessed with his goal. Seeking means: having a goal. But finding means: being free, being open, having no goal."
- ‘Siddhartha’ by Hermann Hesse
"No matter how good things are, there will always be solitary nights you spend in your bedroom, in a car, or in a party full of your closest friends when it feels like the walls are caving in."
